Philosophy

At Little Pinecones Pre-kindergarten we believe that the first years in school can create the foundation for a young child's attitude toward school for the years ahead.

Because of that, we strive to give each child the opportunity to experience education through a well-balanced curriculum, encompassing the many theories from Reggio Emilia to play based to academic, Montessori and more. Taking the best aspects of each of these teaching approaches immerses the child in a safe, nurturing, and flexible home environment as they learn through play, cooperation, socialization, small group and whole group activities, creativity, and nature which builds a sense a confidence and a love of learning.

A teacher who is not only educated but has many years of experience working with young students, who believes and is passionate about these early developing years is key to a successful pre-kindergarten experience.

Testimonials

We have had the pleasure and honor to work with Mrs. Smith as a preschool teacher for years now. She has always been prepared with wonderful and appropriate lesson plans and fun interesting new activities and crafts for the kids geared towards where they are developmentally. She is always energetic and professional, and never misses a beat. We cannot recommend her enough.
-Elizabeth D.

We met Mrs. Smith during our son's first day of prekindergarten in September, 2011. When we walked our son into her classroom, we were greeted with warmth and kindness. Mrs. Smith's creative and innovative classroom activities kept our son engaged and excited to learn. She has a unique ability to bond with each and every child individually. We are so lucky to have had the opportunity to have Mrs. Smith in our lives.

Kellie Smith

My name is Kellie Smith. I am married, have two grown children, and a dog and a cat. I love traveling, adventure, and teaching children. I grew up in the Bay Area and started my teaching career as a Kindergarten teaching assistant at Belmont Oaks Academy, while completing my AA degree in Early Childhood Education at Canada College in Redwood City. I moved to Washington State to complete my Bachelors Degree in International Studies at the University of Washington. While attending the UW, I began teaching prekindergarten at Brighton School, formerly known as Bright and Early. Once I started teaching prekindergarten, I knew I had found my passion. I loved watching the immense growth that these young children experience throughout the school year. Prekindergarten is a magical year; it is their first step away from home and towards their lifelong journey of learning.

Five years ago, I started a Winter Wonderland camp over winter break, where multi-age children spend the day participating in thematic activities together. I also run Parent Night Out events twice a month, enabling parents to have a night out while children do crafts, games, dinner, and a movie in a safe, nurturing environment. Both of these events take place in our home.

I have worked with children for my entire adult life and have always dreamt of teaching an in-home pre-kindergarten class in our home’s beautiful environment in the middle of nature.
